ABOUT ME

Putting my experience to work

As Mayor and member of City Council, I have concentrated on making things happen through competence, collaboration, and calm leadership. Our city is blessed with paid professionals who take great pride and personal ownership in their community. The role of City Council is to facilitate these professionals while being respectful of each other, the citizens and city staff. Over the last four years we have been making things happen through thoughtful controlled growth and beautification of the city. It's very simple, do things right and do the right thing.

Simpsonville has been my home for 37 years. My professional career was in human resources and safety management. The skills I acquired in industry have been a great help in managing Simpsonville's affairs with respect and genuine care for those who will help me with that task. Isn't that what we all want?

I am not a career politician, but a retiree who was pulled from the sidelines by a desire to serve the city. One of my primary aims was to restore civility and to facilitate council meetings in a way that

doesn't bring out TV cameras to see what exciting thing will happen next. Since my election we haven't had that kind of excitement since.

Council meetings should be boring and they pretty much are since I've held the gavel. As a matter of fact, I have never had to bang the gavel to restore order. I keep proceedings in order without it. I bang the gavel twice each meeting, once to convene and once to adjourn. It's a matter of style and competence.

I have brought calm and cool to our council meetings. Don't misunderstand, council doesn't always agree on everything, but we work together respectfully even when we have our differences. This is true even in the rare event a topic causes big concern in the community. There have been times when council chambers are full of citizens with passionate opinions on both sides. It has been my job–and I've been successful–to maintain civility in our meetings.

Let's keep making things happen. I'm counting on your vote so we can do just that.
